Chapter 6

Justice

"She's got nothing for the baby really, just get your arse down to Mothercare and get things for a newborn baby. Take the money from petty cash and I'll reimburse it later."

"What sort of stuff will I need to get?"

"I haven't got time to write a sodding list Buster. Ask one of the ladies in the shop that's what they're there for."

I rolled my eyes as I ended the call and pushed on the door to enter Rebecca's room.

"Oh I'm sorry," Rebecca was feeding the baby and I wanted to respect her privacy.

She sniggered, "It hardly matters now, you've seen everything already."

Rebecca made me laugh, it was one of the things that had made me so attracted to her.

"I've just been discharged by the doctor so I'm allowed to go home."

That was great news because Rebecca could now get comfortable in her own surroundings rather than on a hospital ward. She had now been here for over twenty-four hours. The hospital wanted to keep Lex in for monitoring because he was born early. Throughout their stay, the hospital monitored Lex's feeding, blood sugars and temperature until they were happy that he didn't have mild hypothermia from being born outside in Autumn.

"The hospital has given me some clothes so I can take Lex Arnold Daryl Palmer home."

I smiled, "Lex as in short for Lexus?"

Rebecca nodded, "It's a good job he wasn't delivered in a Skoda because that would be a horrible name for the lad."

I bent down and kissed her head and then Lex's, "I'm honoured that you'd include my name."

"You're more than welcome." Rebecca swung her legs to the edge of the bed and slid carefully before touching the floor.

"Just so you know, Spike is giving us a lift home. We've also sorted out a car seat and Buster is currently at Mothercare buying you some bits that you may need."

Her eyes watered, "Justice, that's not the reason I asked you to come to the hospital with me."

I drew my brows, "Yeah I know that." I was confused by what she was getting at.

I took her hand in mine, "I'm here because I want to be and I've arranged these things because I'm here to help should you want me to."

I let out a long sigh, "Look Rebecca, I like you. Probably more than I should but I can't help the way I feel. I'm pleased that you called me at your hour of need but just because you did, doesn't mean that I think you want more from our friendship or that you're trying to take advantage of the situation."

Rebecca went to speak and I placed my finger over her mouth.

"I don't want you to respond and say something just because you think you should. When you respond to what I've just said it's gotta be from the heart, even if the news may be upsetting for me."

I lowered my finger from her lips and turned to pick up Lex. I needed to get him into his car seat securely before the hospital would allow us to leave.
